How 2G Mobile Technology Works

01

The Basic Idea Behind 2G

At its core, 2G technology converts voice and basic data into digital signals before transmitting them over radio waves. This digital approach is what separates 2G from the earlier analogue mobile systems, and it is the foundation for every mobile network generation that followed.

02

Digital Voice Encoding

When someone speaks into a 2G enabled phone, the microphone captures the sound as an analogue signal, just as it always has. The phone then converts this analogue signal into a digital format using a voice encoding process known as a codec. The codec compresses the voice data so that it takes up less radio bandwidth, allowing more calls to be carried within a limited amount of spectrum. On the receiving end, the same process happens in reverse, converting the digital signal back into sound.

03

Network Architecture

A 2G network, particularly one built on the GSM standard, is organised around a few key components:

  • Mobile devices, which connect wirelessly to the network using a SIM card that identifies the subscriber
  • Base stations, often visible as antenna towers, which handle radio communication with nearby phones within a defined coverage area called a cell
  • Base station controllers, which manage groups of base stations and coordinate tasks such as handing a call over from one cell to the next as a user moves
  • Core network switches, which route calls and messages to their destination, whether that is another mobile phone, a landline, or a messaging service

This cell based structure is why the technology is often referred to broadly as cellular, since coverage is built up from many smaller overlapping cells rather than a single large transmitter.

04

Channels and Spectrum

Radio spectrum is a limited resource, so 2G networks use specific techniques to divide it efficiently among many users. GSM networks commonly use a combination of frequency division, which splits available spectrum into separate frequency bands, and time division, which allows multiple users to share the same frequency by taking turns in very short time slots that happen so quickly the delay is not noticeable to the user. Together these techniques allow a single base station to serve many simultaneous callers using a limited slice of radio spectrum.

05

SMS and Basic Data

Short Message Service was designed to take advantage of small amounts of unused capacity within the existing signalling channels of the network, rather than requiring a dedicated data connection. This is part of why SMS could be introduced on 2G networks without major additional infrastructure, and why it remained reliable even on basic devices with no dedicated data plan.

Later additions to the 2G standard introduced packet based data services, allowing phones to connect to the internet at modest speeds. These additions are sometimes described as intermediate steps between full second and third generation technology, since they used much of the same underlying 2G infrastructure while adding improved data handling.

06

Security Features

2G introduced basic security measures that were a significant improvement over analogue systems. Each SIM card contains a unique identifier and a secret key used to authenticate the device to the network, helping to prevent unauthorised use. Voice calls were also encrypted over the air interface, making it considerably harder to intercept conversations compared to earlier analogue mobile systems, although the encryption methods used in 2G are now considered outdated by current security standards.

07

Why This Architecture Still Appears Today

Many of the core concepts introduced in 2G, such as cell based coverage, SIM based identification, and frequency sharing techniques, remain part of the architecture used in later and current mobile network generations, even though the underlying technology has been significantly upgraded. Understanding how 2G worked provides a useful foundation for understanding how modern mobile networks are structured.
